I was talking to my great uncle about #Debian, and he couldn't believe that it was possible to have a system that was faster, more stable, and less resource-consuming than #Windows and free of cost on top of everything else!
A friend was talking about the possibility of data being mined from discarded laptop hard-drives, but when I mentioned tools to zerofill and otherwise obfuscate the data, she wondered "how can I trust a software to actually clear the data it says it's clearing?"

When I borrow someone else's laptop to browse the Internet, I'm struck by how messy and ad-filled it has become, things I'm blissfully unaware of thanks to my #AdBlocker. But it's hard to explain the improvement to people who have only ever experienced an ad-filled web

What I'm getting from incidents like this is: when one is trapped in the #technocapitalist ecosystem, it's easy to believe that things are always that way. That technology is always annoying and filled with ads and popups; that apps are always made by companies trying to extract the maximum profit possible; that social media platforms always spy on people; that nobody writes widely usable software out of the goodness of their heart

We—and I'm making an assumption about your background, but I think it's a somewhat fair assumption given that you're reading this on the #Fediverse—are lucky to be on the sidelines of #capitalism. Though probably still bound by the system, we're living on the edge, where some of its rules start to break down and we get glimpses, or prolonged experiences, even, of the better world that is possible. A world that, though not too widespread, does in parts already exist ✨
